JENIFA MAYANJA

Ugandan-born and rooted in New York’s underground house movement since the early ‘90s, Jenifa Mayanja has spent decades shaping a deeply personal and uncompromising vision of electronic music culture. DJ, producer, vocalist, label founder, mentor, and creative strategist, her work extends far beyond the confines of conventional dance music.

Mayanja first established herself through New York’s legendary Dancetracks record store before becoming a sought-after selector within the city’s deep house community. Her long-running Bu-Mako Recordings imprint emerged directly from the DIY spirit of underground culture, eventually growing into one of deep house music’s most respected independent labels.

Her productions blend deep house, jazz, soul, dub textures, spoken word, and raw rhythmic experimentation with remarkable emotional honesty. Rather than chasing polished perfection, Mayanja’s music often embraces vulnerability and atmosphere — warm, imperfect, human records rooted in storytelling and lived experience. Releases like Woman Walking in the Shadows helped establish her as one of underground house music’s most distinctive voices.

Beyond the studio and dancefloor, Jenifa Mayanja continues to champion artistic independence, mentorship, and creative longevity through her labels, educational initiatives, and multidisciplinary work. Her legacy remains deeply connected to the foundations of underground house music: community, freedom, experimentation, and soul.
